Nerikomi, also known as neriage, is a Japanese pottery technique where multiple colors of clay are combined to create patterned surfaces, either by stacking and slicing colored clay or by wedging them together. The resulting patterns are embedded within the clay itself, rather than applied on the surface, and can be revealed by slicing through the layered clay. This technique allows for intricate designs and unique surface decorations that are integral to the finished piece.

This class is great for an introduction to hand building and creative technique. Your instructor Jennifer will teach you how to hand build, coil, use a slab roller, pinch pot, use potters tools, and how to apply glaze. The class will explore the nerikomi ceramics process from start to finish.

This class meets on Monday evenings starting on December 1st. The course includes various colors of clay amounting to 25 lbs, free firing, and access to glaze materials. An additional 3 hours of open studio time per week is also included.

Your instructor, Jennifer Alvarez, is a multidisciplinary artist working in the Bay Area since 2011. She has been making with clay since 2005 and enjoys combining wheel thrown and hand built elements in her ceramics. She spends her time creating and teaching throwing and hand building techniques at Auburn Clay Arts Studio and at Kollektiv Clay Studio in Northern California.
