This class is great for an introduction to wheel throwing and creative technique. Your instructor will teach you how to throw on the wheel, how to trim your work with various tools, and how to apply glaze. The class will explore the ceramics process from start to finish.

This class meets on Monday evening from 6 PM - 9 PM for 6 weeks starting on November 17th. The class includes a 25 lb bag of clay, free firing, and access to glaze materials. An additional 3 hours of open studio time per week is also included.

Abby Pletcher has been making ceramics on and off for over 25 years. She got her start at the Potters’ Studio in Berkeley, transitioned into a home studio and recently joined the wonderful MUDWORKS community. Abby works primarily on the wheel making functional pieces for everyday use. You can find her work in homes across the country and at Chez Panisse.

Which wheel throwing class should I take?


Beginner

This class is for students who are new to working on the wheel or who are still getting the hang of centering. In this class we will go over the basics of working on the wheel taking a piece from start to finish. This includes centering the clay, pulling up walls, trimming, and glazing. Students may take this class several times before being ready for the next level.


Advanced Beginner

This class is for students who have taken at least one beginner class and have the hang of the basic steps of working on the wheel including a basic comfort with centering the clay, pulling up walls, trimming and glazing. In this class we will work on increasing comfort with forming different shapes, learn to make and attach handles, carve designs, and begin to throw with intention.


Intermediate

This class is for students who have taken several classes and are comfortable working on the wheel. You should be able to center at least two pounds of clay. In this class we will work on making more advanced shapes and throwing taller and larger. Students will become more comfortable planning and executing their plan, making sets of things, and adding decoration to their pieces.


Advanced

This class is for students who are comfortable and confident working on the wheel and are looking for a refresher or specific guidance. In this class students will decide together on a project like teapots, coffee pour-overs, bottles, etc. and create a finished product. There will also be time to work on your own ideas under supervision of the instructor.


All classes include a 25 lb. bag of clay, free firing and access to glaze material.
